“We had an unbelievable start,” said Gallant. “Everything has gone our way. But we have to battle every night to not be the worst team in our conference.”
Like his players, Gallant has something to prove. He was unceremoniously fired 22 games into the 2016-17 season by the Florida Panthers after leading that moribund franchise to the postseason in the previous year. The front office was at war with itself, and Gallant took the fall for not being a favorite of the regime that held the power.
Not much soothes an angry football team quite like flattening a league rival — as the Huskies did to UCLA two weeks after a loss to Arizona State. But because of its weak out-of-league schedule, U-Dub would likely need help, even as the one-loss Pac-12 champ, to make the top four.
Now the Horned Frogs know how Oklahoma feels. Iowa State is systematically leveling the Big 12’s playoff chances. Opportunity remains for TCU to win the league, but it must rebound quickly with Texas and Oklahoma up next.
“We’re not on the edge of destruction,” the owner said. “It’s an opportunity. It creates real energy, and it creates a great opportunity to get our leadership right going forward. You watch. We will come out of this as a stronger league, and our popularity will come back and increase.”
Bryant booted field goals of 45 and 37 yards to cut the deficit to one at 17-16 in the third quarter. The Falcons wide receiver had been held to just two catches for 21 yards by Morris Claiborne, who left with a foot injury.
On one play, Ball did what he does best, grabbing a defensive rebound, pushing up the pace as the Pistons (5-3) were getting back and taking it to the rim for a score. The rookie shot 6-for-13 from the field — his best shooting night since he shot 12-for-27 against Phoenix.
The Oklahoma City Thunder won’t exercise the fourth-year option for the 2018-19 season on forward Josh Huestis, according to ESPN and multiple reports.
Huestis, 25, has seen sparse playing time since being drafted 29th overall by the Thunder in 2014, though he has cracked the rotation this season, appearing in all seven games so far.
The Thunder can still re-sign Huestis next summer as an unrestricted free agent, but can pay him only up to $2.2 million. The organization remains very high on him as a player, but without enough information and given the uncertainty of the roster going forward, is electing to maintain some flexibility.
“This is the only organization I’ve known and it feels like family, it feels like home, so obviously I would love to continue to be part of the organization and so I’m not thinking about next summer yet.”
Huestis is averaging 1.8 points and 2.2 rebounds in 12.7 minutes per game this season.
The Los Angeles Dodgers will try to force a Game 7 against the Houston Astros with a win Tuesday night. And cheering them on (or simply watching the spectacle) at Dodger Stadium? A cast of high-profile fans.
Garoppolo impressed NFL fans last season, when he stepped in for Tom Brady during Brady’s Deflategate suspension. How will the 25-year-old do as the newest addition to the Niners’ offense? Vote now!
In 2016, Garoppolo had four touchdown passes and a 68.3 completion percentage, with no interceptions in six games. Unless his lawyers can reverse the suspension on appeal or win an emergency injunction pending the appeal, Elliott will likely miss the next six games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Chargers, Redskins and New York Giants before being eligible to return in Week 15 against the Oakland Raiders on Dec. 17.Tags: Oklahoma City Thunder
Fans at Dodger Stadium lustily booed Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel on Tuesday night during Game 6 of the World Series in apparent response to Gurriel’s racially insensitive actions earlier in the series.
Entering the game, the Warriors averaged 17.0 cough-ups a game, the 27th worst mark in the league. They’ll fall dramatically following Sunday’s contest.
Golden State was down 13 with six and a half minutes to play, and ended up cutting it to two, but they never made up the deficit.
On the other hand, the Pistons came back from a 68-54 deficit with 8:30 left in the third quarter to take an 82-81 lead into the final period. This came after overcoming a 70-57 deficit the night before in Los Angeles to come back and beat the Clippers.
Chargers wide receiver Travis Benjamin’s punt return against the Patriots could go down as one of the worst returns in NFL history.
Benjamin reached the end zone, but unfortunately he scored two points for the wrong team.
The punt landed at his own 11-yard line and Benjamin grabbed the ball at the 8-yard line. He then ran backwards in an effort to create separation, but it did not work out as planned. He was then tackled in his own end zone for a Patriots safety, giving New England a 9-7 lead over the Chargers in the second quarter.
Still, Zo’s night wasn’t all negative. He played unselfishly, and his willingness to pass has seemed to catch on with his teammates. With Beverley playing tight defense, Ball tried to affect the game by doing the little things (like rebounding!), and he certainly didn’t check out mentally when the game started slipping away.

Chargers defensive end Chris McCain has a fun tradition before every game where he will pick a kid out of the stands and bring them down onto the field for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You can scroll through his Instagram page and see all of the times he has done it this season.
But if you look at his latest post, you’ll see he ran into a problem while trying to continue his tradition Sunday in Foxborough, Mass., before the Chargers played the Patriots. He provided video and photos of him being stopped by a Gillette Stadium security guard, and he explained in his caption what happened.
Skinner pulled Carolina to 2-1 with a power-play goal with 7 seconds remaining in the first for his seventh of the season. Staal tied it with 6:27 to go in the second as he got Sebastian Aho’s pass from behind the net and beat Miller stick side.
It will be interesting to see if this affects Ingram’s role going forward, considering the Saints have another talented running back in rookie Alvin Kamara, who has been serving as a “1-B” to Ingram’s “1-A.”
Kamara finished Sunday’s game with eight carries for 28 yards and a touchdown and three catches for 48 yards.
Saints coach Sean Payton wouldn’t reveal what his message to Ingram was during a brief sideline exchange.
“The message to Mark will be between me and Mark,” said Payton, who earlier commented that, “You turn the ball over like we did, and you don’t deserve to win games like that. You can’t do it.”
For the Giants, it’s another bad blow to a wide receiving corps that placed Dwayne Harris and Odell Beckham Jr. on injured reserve Monday following injuries each suffered in Week 5. While Marshall was carted off the field with what looked like a serious injury, Giants coach Ben McAdoo called it a sprain after the game.
Evidently, it’s more serious than that.
Sterling Shepard also suffered an ankle injury and is day-to-day in his recovery. The Giants signed Travis Rudolph and Tavarres King on Monday when the team placed Beckham and Harris on injured reserve, but may need to continue to make moves at the position.
The Giants are 0-5 and No. 28 in points scored. With Marshall done for the year, things aren’t looking like they’ll be getting much better any time soon.
The defense has also been great, ranking fifth in total yards allowed with 274 per game and ninth in points per game allowed at 18.8.
In their last 14 games at home against teams with winning records, the Panthers are 10-4 SU per the OddsShark NFL Database.
The Eagles have reigned supreme in the NFC East so far with a 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS record, fueled by an offense that ranks third in the NFL in total yards with 397.8 per game and fifth in scoring with 27.4 points per game. Carson Wentz has passed for 1,362 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Six of the last seven games played on Thursday Night Football have been decided by five points or less. These two teams look likely to continue that trend of close games as they match up strength against strength in Carolina’s defense vs. Philadelphia’s offense. Home field gives Carolina the slight edge on paper, but this looks like an extremely evenly-matched game.
This Sunday, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers will travel to Minneapolis for a NFC North showdown against a Vikings team with a bit of a quarterback quandary. Sam Bradford struggled in Minnesota’s Monday Night Football game against Chicago, and the Vikings finally found some success on offense after benching him in favor of Case Keenum — leaving a question mark at the position heading into Week 6. The teams meet at 1 p.m. ET. on Fox (livestream).
While Thursday night games weren’t all that great last year, we all got suckered into them anyway because, well, it’s football. So here’s everything you need to know about the change.
Games won’t be able to be viewed on Twitter anymore, and Amazon will now offer the games to its Amazon Prime customers. Amazon Prime is a paid subscription service offered by the company, which provides free shipping and streaming items — which now includes 11 Thursday night NFL games.
Yes. Thursday Night Football will still alternate between CBS, NBC, and NFL Network, just as it did last season. The viewing options will vary by the week, with CBS and NBC carrying five games apiece. NFL Network always airs games that are on NBC or CBS, but will also exclusively broadcast its own games.
The New Orleans pass defense, though? It’s like Pat Swilling and Rickey Jackson are out there all over again. Over the past three games, the Saints have the league’s best opposing Total QBR at just 11.7, with no other team within 15 points. They’re second in the NFL in passer rating allowed (56.7) and sack rate (10.1 percent). They’re giving up 4.4 yards per play on first-and-10, the third-best rate in the league. The defense has forced more takeaways in three games (nine) than it did over the entire second half of 2016 (eight).
He also didn’t shut the door on the possibility of putting his franchise quarterback on injured reserve, which would officially end his season.
“No, not at this time,” Ballard said about Luck potentially going on IR.
Wednesday’s news is the latest twist in two-plus years of ongoing issues with Luck’s shoulder. He originally injured it in Week 3 of the 2015 season, then aggravated it in Week 2 of 2016 and spent at least one day a week on the injury report the rest of the season. He missed all of the team’s offseason workouts, training camp and preseason games.
The kick was also Vinatieri’s 27th career game-winner in his incredible career and the 11th successful field goal in overtime.
Indianapolis came close to winning earlier in overtime with a 46-yard pass from Jacoby Brissett to T.Y. Hilton that set the team up inside the 10-yard line. It was the first possession of overtime, so a field goal wouldn’t have won the game without San Francisco first getting a chance to score, but Brissett threw an interception that negated the scoring chance completely.
After stuffing the 49ers, the Colts got another chance when running back Marlon Mack broke free for 35 yards. While the rest of the drive didn’t go anywhere, it didn’t have to, thanks to the always reliable Vinatieri who boosted the Colts to 2-3 on the year.
The Giants won 23-10, becoming the second 13-point underdog to win outright on Sunday. The Miami Dolphins upset the Atlanta Falcons as 13-point underdogs in the early slate. It’s the first time that multiple 13-point favorites lost in the same day since Dec. 9, 1973 (Week 13), according to ESPN Stats & Information.Tags: Jacoby Brissett, T.Y. Hilton
The Giants keep Denver out of the end zone on fourth-and-goal. After a Bennie Fowler catch brought the Broncos to within inches of the goal line, C.J. Anderson took a fourth-down handoff and was met by a group of Giants defenders. He was brought down inches shy of the end zone and Denver turned it over on downs.
Broncos receiver Isaiah McKenzie also just left the game with an apparent leg injury.
Another receiver down for the #Broncos. Isaiah McKenzie being carted off the field after an apparent leg injury.
The NFL’s game operations manual says during the national anthem, “players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking.”
There will be no changes to the league’s anthem policy, but the league is also not expected to discipline any players who may not follow the manual’s instructions to the letter.
Los Angeles (2-0-0) will be well rested for the matchup with three days off since its convincing 4-1 road victory against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
Anze Kopitar registered two goals and Jonathan Quick made 24 saves in the win over their divisional rivals. Coach John Stevens expects his two stars to revert to form after subpar 2016-17 campaigns. Kopitar could never find his stride offensively while Quick was limited to 17 games due to a groin injury. Stevens has installed a new offensive scheme and in the early going the Kings appear to be more aggressive.
Ramirez, who was on the bench to start Game 1, drove in two more runs with a seventh-inning double before Bradley’s homer bounced off Reddick’s glove and into the stands behind the Pesky Pole.
Rizzo blooped a tiebreaking single into left field with two outs in the eighth and the Cubs overcame Max Scherzer’s brilliant performance to beat the Washington Nationals 2-1 on Monday for a 2-1 lead in their NL Division Series.
Paul Secunda, director, labor and employment law program, Marquette University: “I’ve heard a lot of fans talk about Constitutional rights. There are no First Amendment rights involved here because it’s in the private, not public, sector. But I do believe that this is illegal. Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act allows employees to engage in activities to improve workplace conditions. By telling players they can’t stand for the anthem, Jerry Jones is effectively chilling such expression, which is a violation of the act.”
His girlfriend, Deja Hiott, tweeted and then deleted a declaration of Bryant’s disappointment: “You guys should have seen it coming. Taking him off the field, not giving the ball or the chance to reach his full potential.”
It is likely Bryant and his people saw that the Steelers responded to Antonio Brown’s abuse of a cooler during the Oct. 1 Baltimore game by calling for a long pass down the right sideline to AB on the first play of their next game — then decided he might get similar treatment. Of course, if Bryant had caught the same pass, directed his way on the first play of the game at Chicago, none of this falderol might have been necessary.
That pass glanced off his fingertips.
He would do well to drop fewer balls and less news.Tags: Paul Secunda, Washington Nationals
Touchdown. Another huge mistake by Trevor Siemian, another interception, this time returned for a touchdown. Janoris Jenkins made Denver pay for Siemian’s ill-fated pass and returned the pick 43 yards for a score with just 48 seconds left in the first half. Siemian was injured on the play, and backup QB Brock Osweiler entered the game on the Broncos’ next series. 17-3, Giants
Field goal. The Broncos were able to drive all the way to the Giants’ 10-yard line before their drive stalled, and Brandon McManus made a 28-yard field goal to get Denver on the board with 4:21 left in the first half. The key play of the drive was a 40-yard Trevor Siemian pass to Demaryius Thomas. 10-3, Giants
Turnover. Trevor Siemian overthrew a pass intended for Demaryius Thomas, and the ball landed in the arms of Landon Collins, who returned the interception 21 yards to the Giants’ 35-yard line.
The Giants won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half.
The Broncos took the field for pregame warmups wearing their all-blue uniforms for the first time in 2017. The Giants took the field a few minutes later.
His mobility was quickly on show in Minnesota, with Hundley successful in making a number of throws on the run.
Rodgers’ leadership and composure in the biggest moments, which he showed eight days ago as he led another stunning late game-winning drive to defeat the Cowboys, understandably will be tough for the inexperienced Hundley to replicate.
However, there was reason to be encouraged by the poise Hundley demonstrated against the Vikings, as he showed a willingness to hang in the pocket and the awareness to know when to step up and avoid the pass rush, doing so on his sole touchdown throw to Davante Adams.Tags: Brock Osweiler, Janoris Jenkins
