The Falcons fail to corral a short kickoff by the Seahawks, who recover to regain possession. Seattle will start its drive inside the Atlanta 15 with 8:08 to play in the half.
Seattle nearly picks off a Matt Ryan pass near the goal line, but it can’t secure the ball and it falls incomplete.
Turnover, Seahawks. Seattle fails to take advantage of Lockett’s return as Russell Wilson’s second pass of the game is picked off by Desmond Trufant, who returns it 43 yards to the Seahawks’ 35.
Redskins running back Rob Kelley left Sunday’s 38-30 loss to the Vikings with knee and ankle injuries and did not return.
Saints running back Daniel Lasco was taken off the field by ambulance after suffering a spine injury on a second-quarter kickoff. Saints coach Sean Payton said following the game that all signs were positive with Lasco.
Brayden Schenn also had two goals and two assists, and Jake Allen stopped 26 shots for the NHL-leading Blues (16-5-1).
Tarasenko’s fight came in the second period. In just the third scrap of his six-year career, the skilled forward tangled with Matt Benning and landed a solid right hand much to the crowd’s delight.
It sure sounds like the perfect time to let Jimmy Garoppolo make his San Francisco debut when the 49ers return to action Nov. 26 against Seattle.
It’s also not that simple.
“The more we Hall of Famers talk about this — and we talk about it a lot — we realize we can no longer sit silent,” Morgan wrote. “Many of us have come to think that silence will be considered complicity.
In addition, the Braves were banned from signing Robert Puason, a 14-year-old Dominican shortstop with whom they had reached a verbal agreement, when he becomes eligible for a contract on July 2, 2019. MLB said Puason agreed to sign with the Braves because the team agreed with his agent to deals with six other players for “inflated” signing bonuses.
Olive Sagapolu, DT, Wisconsin — The massive 6-2, 346-pound Samoan had a great all-around game against Iowa. Sagapolu helped the Badgers hold Iowa to 25 rushing yards and added a sack that was nearly a safety late in the first half of Wisconsin’s 38-14 win.
Touchdown, Carolina. The Panthers are pulling away from Miami and now lead 31-7. Cameron Artis-Payne takes a handoff, runs through an arm tackle at the line of scrimmage and goes into the end zone for the 12-yard score.
Damien Williams is brought down behind the line of scrimmage by Luke Kuechly and the Dolphins turn it over on downs.
Touchdown, Carolina. Two plays after Samuel’s drop, the Panthers punch it in and take a 24-7 lead. Newton throws a screen pass to Devin Funchess, who avoids Miami’s tacklers for a 28-yard touchdown.
“That was good… but I feel as if we’re still scratching the surface with our potential and things we can do as a whole in this offense,” Newton said. “We left a lot of plays out there.
“There’s nothing saying we hit our pinnacle yet and there’s nothing saying we can’t get better. That’s the thing we’ve just got to be optimistic about.”
With less than two minutes left, the Jaguars led 13-7 and those on Cleveland +7 were seconds away from winning their bet. Then, for the third time in three possessions, DeShone Kizer turned the ball over, this time fumbling it away on a sack that resulted in a Telvin Smith touchdown. That score gave Jacksonville a 19-7 lead, which would stand as the final score after a backdoor cover attempt by the Browns came up short.
Matthews is the main attraction, however, and probably the biggest reason I find myself eagerly watching what Toronto does. Everyone loves goals and Matthews scores a lot of them, but what makes him seemingly different is the way he scores them.
While Darnold may need some more seasoning, we’re splitting hairs here. Both quarterbacks have NFL potential, but it appears Rosen will be better out of the gate. That’s not a shot at Darnold, it’s just a compliment to Rosen.
Either way, watch both guys play. They’re a pleasure to see in action.
In a conference where the Patriots, Steelers and Chiefs rule, the Titans have yet to prove they’re up to the same passing pop. Given that their constant pass defense woes leave them prone to getting into higher-scoring affairs than they would like, Mariota has to go from solid to spectacular. That’s not an easy ask.
Thompson, meanwhile, averaged 4.6 yards per carry as the third-down back and rushed for two scores. He is tied for the team lead with 39 catches, good for 510 yards and four touchdowns. Starting running back Rob Kelley is already on IR.
Onwuasor and his Ravens are now sitting in a wild card spot and in the AFC with several inconsistent teams fighting for the wild card spots, the Ravens and their 6th-ranked defense are sitting pretty for now.
How it works, also per SkyCam’s site: “Skyview interprets the operator’s joystick commands into positional coordinates, tracks the location of the SkyCam, and synchronizes the movement of each reel setting the Skycam in motion. Each of the four suspension lines goes over a precision pulley and is attached to a computer-controlled spooling mechanism.
Colin Kaepernick’s attorney on Tuesday refuted the NFL’s claim that the former 49ers quarterback didn’t respond to an invitation to meet individually with commissioner Roger Goodell, Yahoo Sports reported.
The day showed just how fraught the two sides’ ongoing dealings are against a backdrop of Kaepernick’s labor grievance, accusing NFL owners of collusion, and players’ social-issue concerns and the league’s response to them.
Kaepernick remains open to meeting with Goodell individually, the player’s camp told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday, but only to discuss social-justice issues. Lockhart also says Goodell is willing to meet one-on-one to talk about social activism but won’t agree to a mediator being present.
Notes Yahoo Sports: “The back and forth between Kaepernick’s camp and the NFL has provided a window into the frustration that is developing between the league and players in recent weeks.”
The highlight of Sunday’s slate of late games was Cowboys vs. Falcons in Atlanta, where Dallas was forced to operate without running back Ezekiel Elliott for the first time this season. The Falcons were able to use the timing of Zeke’s NFL-imposed suspension as an advantage, beat the Cowboys and keep pace in the NFC wild-card race.
Sunday’s night cap was game that would have been more appealing had the Broncos held up their end of the deal. Denver, playing off a four-game (now five) losing streak and sitting at the bottom of the AFC West, lost to New England, which recently has looked more like the team many expected to see in 2017.
“I’ve had tough games before,” Peterman said following the loss. “I’m going to learn a lot from this and make sure it never happens again.”
Despite the awful performance by Peterman, McDermott wasn’t ready to commit to Taylor for the remainder of the season.
The Giants keep Denver out of the end zone on fourth-and-goal. After a Bennie Fowler catch brought the Broncos to within inches of the goal line, C.J. Anderson took a fourth-down handoff and was met by a group of Giants defenders. He was brought down inches shy of the end zone and Denver turned it over on downs.
Broncos receiver Isaiah McKenzie also just left the game with an apparent leg injury.
Another receiver down for the #Broncos. Isaiah McKenzie being carted off the field after an apparent leg injury.
The NFL’s game operations manual says during the national anthem, “players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking.”
There will be no changes to the league’s anthem policy, but the league is also not expected to discipline any players who may not follow the manual’s instructions to the letter.
Los Angeles (2-0-0) will be well rested for the matchup with three days off since its convincing 4-1 road victory against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
Anze Kopitar registered two goals and Jonathan Quick made 24 saves in the win over their divisional rivals. Coach John Stevens expects his two stars to revert to form after subpar 2016-17 campaigns. Kopitar could never find his stride offensively while Quick was limited to 17 games due to a groin injury. Stevens has installed a new offensive scheme and in the early going the Kings appear to be more aggressive.
Ramirez, who was on the bench to start Game 1, drove in two more runs with a seventh-inning double before Bradley’s homer bounced off Reddick’s glove and into the stands behind the Pesky Pole.
Touchdown. Another huge mistake by Trevor Siemian, another interception, this time returned for a touchdown. Janoris Jenkins made Denver pay for Siemian’s ill-fated pass and returned the pick 43 yards for a score with just 48 seconds left in the first half. Siemian was injured on the play, and backup QB Brock Osweiler entered the game on the Broncos’ next series. 17-3, Giants
Field goal. The Broncos were able to drive all the way to the Giants’ 10-yard line before their drive stalled, and Brandon McManus made a 28-yard field goal to get Denver on the board with 4:21 left in the first half. The key play of the drive was a 40-yard Trevor Siemian pass to Demaryius Thomas. 10-3, Giants
Turnover. Trevor Siemian overthrew a pass intended for Demaryius Thomas, and the ball landed in the arms of Landon Collins, who returned the interception 21 yards to the Giants’ 35-yard line.
The Giants won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half.
The Broncos took the field for pregame warmups wearing their all-blue uniforms for the first time in 2017. The Giants took the field a few minutes later.
His mobility was quickly on show in Minnesota, with Hundley successful in making a number of throws on the run.
Rodgers’ leadership and composure in the biggest moments, which he showed eight days ago as he led another stunning late game-winning drive to defeat the Cowboys, understandably will be tough for the inexperienced Hundley to replicate.
However, there was reason to be encouraged by the poise Hundley demonstrated against the Vikings, as he showed a willingness to hang in the pocket and the awareness to know when to step up and avoid the pass rush, doing so on his sole touchdown throw to Davante Adams.
To help you set your lineups and avoid starting a player who won’t take the field, we will post fantasy-relevant updates and analysis here as NFL teams release their Sunday inactive lists before kickoff. Any rankings cited in this column come from our ESPN Fantasy staff ranks.
Sean Lee (3:05 p.m.): The Dallas linebacker will miss his second straight game because of a hamstring injury. If you started Aaron Rodgers in fantasy, you’re probably happy with this news.
Only the Colts, who have given up multiple touchdowns off turnovers this season, have given up more points this season than the Patriots. New England’s defense, which gave up the fewest yards in the NFL last season, is giving up the most now. The unit and the coaches will get the benefit of the doubt for quite a while. Jameis Winston and the Bucs’ offense gets Doug Martin back from suspension this week. It’s a short week.
If Cam Newton is back to being Cam Newton, as the win over the Patriots teased, and the defense stays as good as it has been, everyone had better worry about these Panthers. The Lions, though, are still more dangerous than many give them credit for. Problem is they’re tempting the odds by always having to come back in dramatic fashion, led by Matthew Stafford.
With his team trailing 31-28 and 1:13 remaining in the game, Rodgers led Green Bay down the field and into the red zone in under a minute. Then, with 11 seconds to go, he threw a touchdown pass to Davante Adams in the right corner of the end zone to give the Packers a 35-31 road victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
The NFL has fought doggedly to preserve the six-game suspension Roger Goodell issued to Ezekiel Elliott. The latest step in that lengthy process is appealing the decision of a federal court in Texas to grant an injunction that will let Elliott play until his lawsuit against the NFL is completed. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the league took that step Monday morning.
In its motion, the NFL said that if the court didn’t issue a ruling by the close of business on Thursday, it would appeal to a higher court. No decision came on Thursday, and the league filed another appeal with the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in Texas on Friday morning, according to sports and gaming attorney Daniel Wallach.
Vaccaro admitted he didn’t play his best in Week 1 but said he was surprised that he was benched.
Watkins, to the delight of Rams fans as well as his fantasy owners, lit up the stat sheet with six catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns, but as he crossed the goal line for his second score, he took a helmet-to-helmet hit. He was taken into the medical tent on the team’s sideline before going back to the locker room.
Austin didn’t catch a pass but rushed for 14 yards on three carries. He left the game around the same time as Watkins.
While the NFL’s policy mandates that players be cleared by an independent doctor before returning to practice or competition after sustaining a concussion, Watkins and Austin have 10 days to get healthy ahead of the Rams’ next game, Oct. 1 at the Cowboys.
Falcons 24, Packers 7: And the Falcons got into the end zone once again on a 3-yard pass to Tevin Coleman.
Falcons 17, Packers 7: A Desmond Trufant interception gave the Falcons great field position and a chance to extend their lead before the half.
Falcons 17, Packers 7: Matt Ryan and the Falcons drove down the field on a seven-play, 58-yard drive capped off with a field goal.
This grab by Julio Jones gave the Falcons the boost they needed to jump ahead by double digits.
Falcons 14, Packers 7: Another nice drive for the Falcons gave them the lead again. And just like on their first possession, the score came on a Devonta Freeman 1-yard run.
Not that you would’ve expected otherwise. After a strong 6-for-6 start, he was intercepted. He lost a fumble on the Bears’ next drive.
Surely, he’d be better on his next possession? NOPE. Glennon threw a pick-six to give the Bucs a 23-0 lead with four left minutes in the first half.
Replaced by Jameis Winston in Tampa Bay, the only question left for Glennon’s career at this point is when he’ll be replaced by Mitch Trubisky. If Bears fans have their way, look for it to happen sooner rather than later.
Oh my…. if Mitchell doesn’t play in the near future, I’m dusting off my collection of The Best of T J Hooker dvds
Tomlin, in his 11th season as Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, was the Vikings defensive coordinator in 2006. That was the job that preceded his leap to Pittsburgh.
During that 2006 season, Tomlin turned heads with his leadership and fire-like emotion. Then-Steelers owner Dan Rooney recognized it, reached for Tomlin, and the rest is Steelers history.
Tom Flores, the Oakland Raiders’ two-time Super Bowl-winning coach, is recovering from a fall he suffered after Oakland’s exhibition at the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 26.
The 80-year-old Flores now serves as the color analyst on Raiders radio broadcasts, but he missed the preseason finale and the regular-season opener. He expects to be at the Oakland Coliseum for the Raiders’ home opener against the New York Jets on Sunday while wearing a neck collar.
It might be a while for Denver and LA — more wins and losses — to know whether Joseph and Lynn are keepers. But neither wasted time in proving they have what it takes to be the right men for their jobs.
When they meet again in Week 7 in Los Angeles, their teams’ identities will have been established, and the stakes in the division race will be higher. There should be every expectation that we’ll get more of the same — and, let’s hope, for a long time to come.
“They thought at first it was possibly a tibia [fracture], and they came out and told me at halftime that it was negative, but he wasn’t good enough to go back in the game.”
Flores did not want to make a big deal out of his fall.
“Every day I’m doing a little better,” Flores said. “The MRI said it looks like no surgery, so that’s good. But it looks like I’ll have to walk around wearing this neck collar for six weeks. I plan on being at Sunday’s game.”
The first Latino starting quarterback in pro football history with the Raiders in 1960, Flores was also the first minority coach to win a Super Bowl, which he did with the Raiders in Super Bowl XV. He won another three years later when the franchise was located in Los Angeles. Flores has a third ring as an assistant on John Madden’s Super Bowl XI-winning staff and a fourth as Len Dawson’s backup on the Kansas City Chiefs who won Super Bowl IV.
